What is the custom duty in Saudi Arabia?

Saudi Arabia uses the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding system for tariff classification purposes. As a GCC member, the VAT of 5 percent is levied on most goods imported from countries outside the GCC.

Goods imported that compete with those produced domestically have a duty rate of 12 to 20 percent depending on the product. Dates, for example, are dutiable at 40 percent and cigarettes and other tobacco products are dutiable at 100 percent.

Certain goods are exempt from the external tariff. Goods manufactured and transported within the GCC states are exempt from duties. There are also a number of GCC-approved country-specific exceptions. Additionally, Saudi has a list of 758 exceptions that may be imported duty-free, including most livestock and aircrafts.

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) are responsible for the safety of food and drugs in the Kingdom. They monitor the safety of food consumption for humans and animals, the safety of pesticides and create clear and effective food safety policy. 

Additionally, they ensure the quality of pharmaceuticals entering the country are quality and non-counterfeit to encourage trust in the health industry by the community. This also includes the safety of medical and pharmaceutical instruments and cosmetics.

Certain products require the SFDA approval before they’ll receive entry clearance into the country. These products include:
