Riyadh hosted their first international half marathon, with a winning prize of a million riyals ($267,000). The marathon was a part of the government’s drive to increase sports and entertainment in the Kingdom.

The race circled to the King Saud University and hundreds of male contestants raced in one of the 3 categories – 21, 8 and 4 kilometres.

First place went to Ethiopian runner, Tamira Mola, taking home the million riyal cash prize.

Saudi sports authority chief, Turki al-Sheikh, also attended tweeting photos of the race’s oldest contestant, 79-year-old Khalaf al-Balawi.

To continue the growth of the sports and entertainment sector, the Kingdom’s General Entertainment Authority announced they will stage over 5000 festivals and concerts in 2018, twice as many as last year and therefore bring $64 billion in the sector over the next decade.

Additionally, Riyadh also hosted their first ever jazz festival showcasing artists from Beirut and New Orleans.
